Why? There is a lot of merit to the argument that we should reduce the global population. The world is over populated and resources are finite. The problem is how to bring it about.
They're predicting a population collapse in the coming decades and that has people worried, especially China. It's regretting it had its one child policy. The population is rapidly aging and there won't be enough Mohicans to keep up its industrial pace.

Anyway, whether population is too much or not changes over time. Back in Malthus's day, he was blathering when the global population was about 1 billion. Mankind's inventiveness has kept his pessimism at bay.

I am aware of predictions of the population plateauing and then declining, and I think they have some merit. That said, there is still merit in saying the world is over populated. There just aren't enough resources to go around now, let alone any additional people. To many people are starving, dying of thirst and disease and are homeless already. nevermind the strain an extra billion or two will put on those resources. The fact that the few control the bulk of those resources only serves to exacerbate the problem.

Far more interesting will be the changing economic positioning of the first world countrys. They will suffer the most from an aging population and some of the third world coutries, whose birth rates are still high, will be ina position to become the powerhouses of the manufacturing world. Just what current first world coutries do to maintain control will be interesting. I think the west's attacks on Chinas rise is just the start of it.
