Maths is fun, physics us amazing

Post by HBS Guy »

This guy has tremendous zeal about teaching physics!

Do have a look:

or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPUuF_dECVI

Notice maths is used.

Maths:
1. Pure maths—just mathematical principles studied without regard to usefulness to any branch of science

2. Applied maths—maths used to quantify natural events, like the subject of the lecture above

You would be hardpressesd to pass a cigarette paper between applied mathematics and mathematical physics, both postgrad stuff. But maths is fun and beautiful and physics is amazing.

I would have KILLED to have fantastic material like these YouTubes available when I was studying at Uni!

I hated math in school. But I watched the whole video, and it was interesting. He is a very good teacher. Watching him teach brought back memories from my days growing up.

My father was an engineer for General Electric, working in the nuclear energy field. He fit the classic stereotype of such a person. Conservative in dress and manner, reserved, bespeckled, highly intelligent. He was one of those guys who figured out highly complex engineering without the help of computers back in the day. I can remember him helping me out with my algebra homework when I was a kid.

For some reason, I didn't inherit his aptitude for such things. Instead, while I struggled with math, I excelled in the social sciences, reading, and English composition. So it figures that I didn't end up in a technical field, but in one where I would work with people of all sorts and where I would do a ton of writing. Every crime must be turned into a complete story, so to speak - the who, what, where, when, and why. Over the years, I must have written thousands of pages of true stories based upon what I saw and what people told me and the notes I took in the process.

My brother took after him. He became a university professor and is now retired.

Funny how things turn out like that.
“I shall pass through this world but once. Any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” - Stephen Grellet

Yes indeed.
I myself hated maths.. not because I couldn't understand, I couldn't see what the teacher was writing on the Board.
His writing was tiny, he was extremely fussy and fast and my eyesight was poor ( undiagnosed then). I tried to read off my fellow students paper but could never keep up, and couldn't approach him.. he was scary.

So whole swathes of information and science were lost to me for many years.
I was also excellent at English , English Literature, Geography and Art.

Sadly nothing much came of any of that.

And then, many yrs later I find myself in a place and a time, where my analysis of a mathematical advice on Superannuation Law showed up a major flaw in the publication they were about to release.!!
They practically bowed down to me.. I'd saved them from a major gaff that would have resounded NATIONWIDE. :bgrin
That was fun.

NOW I am retired. :bgrin

He has others. The one I linked is maths-heavy but there is another one where he is lecturing not students but community members and it is fast paced and excellent. Why is the sky blue? Why are sunsets and sunrises red? Physics explains!

The Eddy Woo maths lecture, sit down and watch it, maths coming to life in front of you. You might at least see why some are fascinated by maths. I loved how he got the class to crunch the numbers to show that 0 to the 0 power is equal to one! (Pathetic phpoBB3.3 won’t let me use superscripts.

10 squared is the 2nd power, 10 x 10 = 100, expressed as 10^2

Any number raised to the 1th power is just the number 10^1 = 10

More interesting, EVERY number raised to the 0th power is 1: 10^0 = 1.

So is 0^0 and that is VERY counterintuitive!

I feel your pain. Just like the Teachers at High School......they drag some formula out of their arse and expect someone who has never heard of it to just accept it and move on from there. Nah, not me. They assign some magic to something....and do not explain the magic.

I have watched the YouTube thing and some more of his. Out of his arse he will pluck something...sine/cosine and expect 'me' to just go......'Okay.' Nah.

"We'll call this *whatever*" and then chuck a square root symbol over it, and he expects me to just blindly nod! Nah.

Sure.....but when I was at High School, they just said.......'This is sin and this is cosine, tangent etc' and never once was it explained WTF they were. I was being asked to take the Teacher's word for some crap I did not know about or was explained to me.

Nah. Never, with me. Unless they take the time to tell WTF that crap really is......I tune out.

It's like some wanker telling me that Adam and Ever were real, and I had to accept that as fact.

Nah.

Genesis
16 And Cain went out from the Lord's presence and dwelled in the land of Nod east of Eden.
17And Cain knew his wife and she conceived and bore Enoch. Then he became the builder of a city and he called the name of the city like his son's name.

If someone tries the old adam and eve on me I focus on cain and able...
IF Adam and Eve where the first people... then who founded the land of nod..
When Cain got married was it his sister or a niece ?
Math is much harder to discredit... :purple

Completing the tripod of the basis of all science—biology, astronomy & astrophysics—is chemistry.
