April 2020 as hot as April 2016

For scientific papers on AGW, record happenings in the Arctic and the Greenland, Himalayan and Antarctic icesheets. Also weatherstorms and higher than average rainfalls and other extreme weather events.

April 2020 as hot as April 2016

Post by HBS Guy »

Last month tied 2016 for the hottest April on record worldwide, with particularly high temperatures over western Europe and north-central Asia, the European Union's climate monitoring network said Tuesday.

Temperatures were also well above average over parts of Greenland and Antarctica, accelerating the disintegration of kilometres-thick ice sheets that have become the main drivers of sea level rise, the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) reported.

April 2020 was a statistically insignificant 0.01 degrees Celsius cooler than the same month in 2016, the warmest April registered since the late 19th century, when reliable records began.

"The average temperature for the 12 months to April 2020 is close to 1.3C above the pre-industrial level," the benchmark by which global warming is often measured, Copernicus said.

Destabilisation of the Greenland, Himalayan and Antarctic ice sheets continues.

Fme: I think it was Greg who said on this forum that it was 40 degrees at nine in the morning: I put my head out the window and almost f died! It was a Sunday: Saturday was also 40 degrees and simply didn't cool down. Greg knows the story! He told it to me.

Saying that: I went to Melbourne last Christmas and they had 2 days at least near 40: absolutely scorching! Then we came back to Perth and told the Uber guy what the mother fucking story was! :rofl

Zeke Hausfather @hausfath

With April 2020 tying 2016 as the warmest April on record, it raises the odds of 2020 being the warmest year on record from ~64% to ~80% in the ERA5 dataset:

Image
You might ask yourself: if the COVID19 shutdown decreased CO2 emissions how did April get so warm?

1. CO2 hangs around in the atmosphere for a very long time. A few months of somewhat lower emissions is not going to reduce atmospheric CO2. Power and cement are still being made!

2. CO2 is not the only emission from industry: there are sulphite and sulphate emissions. These are aerosols that reflect sunlight away. Fewer aerosol emissions, the warmer it gets. Sulphate emissions are removed from the atmosphere much faster than CO2 is.

AGW does not stop! There is built in warming still to come.

In Australia increasing ocean temperatures are increasing the Indian Ocean Dipole which will bring more droughts to Australia. This means increased bushfire risk.

It may have but local weather hot or cold is not that relevant.
