Good riddance ... Police officers across the US have quit their jobs in recent days. Here is where there have been resignations

I read that Seth, Whats your take on the reduction in officers there and her getting out, you think she left because she wanted to or pushed out ?
Let me say first that I'll give her a lot of credit for her class and grace. I know myself well enough to know that, if it were me, I would have verbally annihilated the mayor and city council as a parting gift. So I give her a lot of credit.

My guess is that her retirement was on her own accord. I don't think the white mayor of Seattle and mostly white city council could have seriously considered firing her. Such a move would reek of racism, and so I think she was pretty much "bullet proof". Among many other things, she is on the executive board of the NAACP. The optics of firing her would have been unpalatable for the mayor and city council.

Privately, I think she had had enough. She did not support the "defund the police" movement, and she was not going to preside over the layoff of 100 police officers she hired, many of whom are people of color and much diversity. She was also deeply offended by the lack of respect for her command staff who the city council voted to cut their pay. She was willing to say this much ...

“This is not about the money, and it certainly isn’t about the demonstrators,'' said Best, whose retirement will be effective Sept. 2. “I have a lot thicker skin than that. It really is about the overarching lack of respect for the officers. … Targeting my command staff and their pay, it just felt very vindictive and very punitive, and I don’t want them to be affected by that type of animus.’’

"animus" - strong dislike or enmity; hostile attitude

All police chiefs walk a tightrope between supporting the elected officials who hired them and their support for their officers and staff. With the city council cutting her staff and cutting the pay of others and yielding to the mob, she could no longer walk that tightrope in good conscience.

The mayor appointed a Deputy Chief, Adrian Diaz, a man of hispanic descent, as the acting Chief. If I were him, I would have told them to go fuck themselves.

I think the mayor and council have lost their ever-loving minds, and they are asking for trouble. So be it.

People on this board can't understand how I could possibly vote for Trump. Well, here is a good example. I am not going to vote for the Seattle model or the Portland model, which is what I would be doing if I voted for Biden. These are also good examples of why policy matters more than personality.

It certainly is an imperfect system, but I don’t know how to make it perfect.

A few years ago a judge wouldn’t sentence a convicted felon to prison because “she was too attractive” to be in prison.

And you may have heard of the judge who bought the “affluenza” defense (too affluent and privileged to understand the consequences of his actions.)

Sheesh ....
I certainly agree that she is far too attractive to be in jail. Also, the fact that she had no previous criminal record, that it was her first offence, that she only ran a stop sign, and again, that she was far too attractive to go to jail.

If the "affluenza"defense is about the guy in Texas, that was also a drunk driving and killed and injured a lot of people with his car, then Yes, I've heard of it. Clearly, there is no comparing the two cases. He was definitely ugly!!

Regarding our legal system, indulge me. Firstly, all lawyers would have a fixed fee schedule for all criminal cases. This fee would be the same, regardless of of the practice(private, public, etc.). But, you would only get a bonus payment whenever you LOSE your case. However, you can't tamper with the rules of evidence, the rights of the accused, the chain of custody, witnesses testimonies, and all rules of jurisprudence. If you do, you are no longer in the game. In theory, you are still trying to convince the jurors or guilt and innocence, except that the incentives have changed. Anyway, it's a thought.

I know he can answer for himself, but I think his tongue was firmly planted in his cheek in those first two paragraphs.

God i hope so. If so, forgive me. I'm just used to reading the most alarming stuff. I'm on a hair trigger.

the best surfing music album ever. I guess i think that because it was so current when i was 17 and I haven't grown up much since. Most music now seems so derivative when it has been done so much better before.

That was excellent the DOORS.. ORIGINAL.

The same people who want to "defund the police" just a few years ago told you "you don't need guns because you have the police to protect you".

What gave it away Seth? The fact that I mention she had no previous criminal record? That she only ran a stop sign while under the influence? That this was her first criminal offence? Or, that probation and community service is almost a rubber stamp on DUI first offenders?

Claiming to be too pretty for prison, says more about her personally, than it does about the punishment she received. But I definitely agree that she is too pretty to go to prison.
